In former times, winemakers in Austria, planted different grape varieties together in the same vineyard, harvested, and vinified the grapes together. These field blends, so-called Gemischter Satz, was a sure fire way to produce a balanced wine, no matter the growing conditions of that year, as certain grapes ripened earlier or later than others. Today, a few winemakers have elevated this wine from obscurity to cult status.
